A French national broadcaster has highlighted a town in Essex for not taking the Covid-19 virus seriously enough.

LCI – a national French TV news channel – visited Basildon, Essex, and chastised the town for the lack of attention its residents apparently held for coronavirus measures.

In an article on its website, a journalist wrote that on a trip to Basildon, they noticed people flouting face covering rules.

The article read: “In this city of more than 100,000 souls, we can see a certain neglect in respect of sanitary measures.

“Once in the city centre, part of the population seems to have left their mask at home.

‘It hurts me’ justifies a passer-by with his face uncovered.

“Despite a third violent wave, wearing a mask is not compulsory in the streets of England.

“Only inside the shops. A rule widely flouted by the population.”

The journalist went on to say that he saw those in shops not wearing masks either.

They said: “At a supermarket checkout, many customers line up – without a mask.

“They wait within a metre of each other.

‘”I have been wearing the mask all morning. I need a break but I will put it back on soon,”‘explains one individual.

“At the entrance to the store, no one checks compliance with sanitary rules, also for fear of scaring customers away.

“We are not the police, we cannot ask customers to wear the mask, otherwise they may get angry,’ explains a saleswoman.”

The article comes as the UK records its highest ever Covid-19 daily death toll.

Yesterday (Friday, January 9), 1,325 Covid-19 deaths had been recorded by the government in the previous 24 hours.

Basildon currently has an infection rate of 1323.2 cases per 100,000 residents.

That’s higher than what it was in December, when Basildon was the most infected area in the country.

Now, Basildon is the 13th most infected area, with the worst areas situated on the Essex/Greater London border.

It shows that nationwide, rates are increasing rapidly, along with deaths.
