Shocking Covid-19 mapping data has revealed the highest ‘in the red’ locations across the West Midlands.

Birmingham currently has a shockingly high coronavirus case rate per 100,000 members of its population – standing at 739.2.

According to Public Health England data, 8440 new cases were recorded in the city last week, up from 4,100 the week before, when the rate was 364.4.

Seven mass vaccination centres will open across England today.

Ashton Gate football stadium in Bristol, Epsom racecourse in Surrey, the Excel Centre where London’s Nightingale hospital is based, Newcastle’s Centre for Life, the Manchester Tennis and Football Centre, Robertson House in Stevenage and Birmingham’s Millennium Point will offer jabs to people aged 80 and older, along with health and care staff.

These centres will be joined later this week by hundreds more GP-led and hospital services along with the first pharmacy-led pilot sites, taking the total of sites to around 1,200.

20 areas of Birmingham and the Black Country now have an infection rate of over 1,000 cases per 100,000.

The Government has set a target of having 15 million people vaccinated by mid-February, with every adult in the UK vaccinated by autumn.

Barking & Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,592 new cases recorded in the seven days to January 4 – the equivalent of 1,687.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Hall Green Central has a rate of 1,500 in Birmingham.

Data is worked out from seven–day rolling rates. These are expressed per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.
