The seven-day case rate per 100,000 for the Island, though five days behind, is now 1,171.6 — an increase on yesterday’s figure of 1,119.4.

Ninety per cent of Covid cases on the Isle of Wight are now through the new strain of the virus.

The variant, which started in Kent and has worked its way across the South, has seen coronavirus levels rocket, moving it from one of the safest areas to having one of the highest case rates in the UK in just a few days.

Earlier today, new data released by NHS England revealed two more Covid-related deaths had been confirmed at St Mary’s hospital — one on Sunday, January 10, and another on Monday.

In the UK, 1,564 deaths were reported today — the biggest daily increase since the start of the pandemic.

An Isle of Wight physiotherapist working at St Mary’s Hospital has shared her experience of contracting Covid-19 — warning others to take the virus more seriously.

Caroline Robertson said she could vividly recall asking her husband to check on her every ten minutes as she lay in bed terrified she could stop breathing at any moment.
