Health officials have confirmed a further 249 coronavirus infections in Leicester and the wider county in the past 24 hours.

There were 101 new cases diagnosed in the city, while the total for the wider county was 165, the Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed.

Broken down by local authority areas, Charnwood, including Loughborough, recorded 37 new infections, while the figure for the Harborough district was 32.

Hinckley and Bosworth recorded 16 new cases, and there were 28 in North West Leicestershire, which covers the towns of Coalville and Ashby.

There were 19 cases in Oadby and Wigston borough, 13 in Blaby district and just three in the Melton borough.

Almost 75,000 people in the city and county have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the crisis.

The new cases, updated today at 4pm, mean that the total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic area by area are :

  • Leicester: 33,746

  • Blaby: 6,548

  • Charnwood: 11,550

  • Harborough: 4,781

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 5,638

  • Melton: 2,427

  • North West Leicestershire: 5,498

  • Oadby and Wigston: 4,691

In other coronavirus news, a new walk-in test centre has opened in Leicester as efforts continue to drive down the city’s persistently high infection rates.

The new centre, at Hamilton Library, in Maidenwell Avenue, Hamilton, is for people who do not have coronavirus symptoms but who want to make sure they are free of the illness.

It is the sixth rapid testing facility to be opened by the city council.

Also today, it emerged that the rate at which Covid jabs are being given out in the city and county has significantly slowed down.

There have been 39,491 people have been injected since figures were last updated – compared to nearly 56,000 at the previous update.

Figures released today relate to jabs given up to and including February 21.

They show that 287,401 people have now received their first dose, 7,032 second doses have also been given.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

  • Leicester: 248.7 cases per 100,000

  • Blaby: 176.3 cases per 100,000

  • Charnwood: 199.1 cases per 100,000

  • Harborough: 124.7 cases per 100,000

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 148.5 cases per 100,000

  • Melton: 111.3 cases per 100,000

  • North West Leicestershire: 202.7 cases per 100,000

  • Oadby and Wigston: 164.9 cases per 100,000
