It’s the end of a beautiful relationship. I used to love John Lewis stores because just being inside of them made me feel better, stronger and, yes, happier. I would put up with a great deal, including negotiating Sheffield’s ring road from hell, to spend money there.

But now John Lewis in Sheffield, formerly Cole Brothers, has closed. My other favourite store, in Tunbridge Wells, scene of many a spendathon, has also just been shut. And yes, I am taking it personally. I have cut up my JL credit card, deleted my loyalty card and — shock, horror — unsubscribed (such an ugly word) from their emails.
