To start the process, make a list of 3 of your biggest fears and see if you can discover where they come from. You can mentally go back to a time when a fear seemed to grip you. What were the components/circumstances before and after? In order words connect the dots between the similarities then and now.

Then, ask yourself if you are willing to release those fears. (I hope you say yes!) If not, you need to discover the deep emotional wound that the experience created. It goes without saying some wounds are deeper and more intense than others. What Causes Driving Phobia Is Less Important Than Its Solution

Human phobias, which are generally defined as an intense, irrational fear of an object, place, or event, are mysterious. They are very common – experts believe at least 1 in 10 people will develop a phobia at some point in their lives. Yet it’s often unclear WHY they develop.

Phobias are fears, and fear is a normal part of life. Fear is a good thing in many cases. It’s good to be afraid of things that really can hurt us, like certain insects, dangerous animals, or falling off cliffs. But the human mind can fixate on some fears and over-exaggerate them out of proportion to their actual danger.

Being afraid of something (even something irrational) is not in and of itself a phobia. A phobia is formed when we anticipate danger and begin to avoid places and situations we associate with that danger. So a phobia is irrational fear PLUS habitual avoidance.

The 2 Main Ways Phobias Develop

Phobias tend to either develop gradually with no definable cause, or suddenly as a response to a traumatic event.

In the case of driving phobia, some sufferers report their fear came on gradually, steadily becoming worse over time. This type of phobia usually has no apparent cause and is often a simple misfire between the brain and the feelings / nervous system. Driving somehow becomes associated with danger, even though nothing dangerous actually happened.

Some people develop driving phobia as a direct response to trauma; things like car accidents, bodily injury, injury to other drivers, property damage etc. It’s more obvious why the person associates driving with danger in these cases.

This type of phobia is a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is lingering fear that hangs on even after a tramatic event is over and resolved. The tricky thing about PTSD-related phobias is that they’re not, strictly speaking, irrational.

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you do have some real cause to be afraid of driving. Driving actually can be a dangerous activity. The tough part is teasing out how much of your fear is rational vs. over-exaggerated. How dangerous is driving really?

So You Have Driving Phobia. Now What?

Whether your driving phobia is gradual or is a result of PTSD, I’m sorry. I sympathize, because I’ve also suffered with this phobia. It can be a tough thing to live with.

The good news is that phobias respond well to treatment. Treatment options for driving phobia (or any other) include:

Which Solution is Right for You?

Phobias:

A phobia is any excessive or unreasonable fear reaction which is linked to an object, place or situation. Phobias are extremely common. They develop usually after an incident in which our subconscious wrongly links fear to an object, place or situation.

There are many ways a phobia can be created and some start without any apparent or discernible cause. One way a phobia can begin is what I call the ‘startle response’. To use the fear of a spider as an example. If there is a sudden or unexpected movement most people will start or jump as the body and mind focuses towards the new stimulus. Even those unafraid and comfortable around spiders might jump if a spider startled them, it’s a normal human response. However most people would then normally dismiss their reaction with the thought “oh it’s only a spider, it can’t do me any harm” and they would forget about it.

But sometimes if a person is preoccupied before the event perhaps particularly stressed by a totally unrelated issue to a spider like work or life in general, and then were startled by a spider a phobia could be born.

Then the stress you already had overflows into a startled response and in your mind the spider becomes associated with feelings of panic. When in fact you were already stressed before you saw whatever it is you have a phobia about. Then you may find that your subconscious mind wrongly links the object, or place. It’s a kind of inbuilt self preservation instinct if your subconscious believes there to be harm associated with an object it tries to steer you clear by fostering a fear or apprehension.

It is an associated link again. Like a song you once heard automatically reminds you of a feeling in a situation from the past because you have made an associated link.

The human mind works by association, when we experience two things together for a little while, one will automatically remind us of the other in the future. Hypnosis can replace that negative association with a more positive feeling.

The only reason you think you have a fear or phobia is because you remember what happened the last time you saw the object, a place or situation due to the association that you created. The World Mental Health Day is behind us. Its main purpose is to raise awareness about mental health issues and destigmatize the people who have mental disorders. Yes, destigmatize, because there are still parts of this world where mental disorders are shameful and visiting a psychiatrist, psychologist or psychotherapist feels like the worst nightmare.

Thanks to several factors, many mental disorders are not taken seriously both by the people experiencing them and the people around them.

For instance, untreated anxiety can become agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder characterized by symptoms of anxiety in situations when the person perceives the surroundings as unsafe and not easy to get away from.

This stigma is closely tied with discrimination and discrimination is powered by myths. This is why I have decided to make a list of the most common myths regarding mental illnesses, to shed some light on the truth behind them.

Myth 1: Parents Are the Only Ones Responsible

In most cases, especially if it is a child who has some mental illness, you will hear people saying that it is the parents’ fault. If the parents would have been better, the child would not have these problems. This is our myth number one. In my humble opinion, it’s the one that will be with us for many years to come.

This myth completely ignores nature vs nurture studies that have been conducted in the past decades. How we think and what we feel is a bit more complicated. It cannot be explained by just one factor, our parents. If science does confirm the relationship between nature and nurture, this may cause serious problems.

Myth 2: Mental Illness Affects Very Few People

As I stated at the start of this article, there are a lot of people around the globe who are affected by some type of mental illness. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, 1 in 4 of us is going to experience a mental or neurological illness at least once in a lifetime.

It can affect anyone, it affects people of all ages, income and education levels, and it is not something that is specific to a culture or a continent.

Myth 3: Mental Illness is not a “Real” Illness

Don’t confuse mental illnesses with regular ups and downs everyone experiences now and then in their life. The names and description of mental illnesses may have changed over the past years, but the symptoms and their potential severity didn’t.

Keep in mind that these are real health problems that have been recognized long ago and experts have effective treatments. By labeling it as non-real, people are usually expecting it to go away on its own. It is as real as a broken bone. Would you allow someone with a broken bone to avoid seeing a doctor and would you deny him or her any help they might need?

Myth 4: Mental Illness is nothing more than Personal Weakness

It is of great importance to know to tell the difference between personality traits, character flaws and mental illnesses. A personality trait is a characteristic that is distinct to an individual. A character flaw is something that can affect actions, motives and the social interactions of a person. And, it is also a distinctive characteristic. All of these will not prevent a person from function well enough in life.

On the other hand, mental illness is a health condition and it has nothing to do with personal weaknesses. According to the American Psychiatric Association, it involves changes in thinking, emotions or behavior, or any combination of these three. And, a person that suffer from them will usually experience distress or problems functioning in their family, social and work activities. Seeking help and accepting it can only be a sign of strength, not a personal weakness.

Myth 5: Mental Illnesses Make People Dangerous and Violent

The survival instinct has been part of our beings since the beginning. In order to survive, we have to be able to predict violence and quickly react to it so that it can be avoided. Psychologists have been on the quest of identifying predictors of violence, and after a dozen studies, they have come to a conclusion that mental illnesses are not good predictors of violence. They are neither necessary nor sufficient causes of violence. Of course, there will always be isolated cases.

In fact, studies show that there are far more mentally ill people who are victims of violence than the ones committing the violence. The major determinants of violence remain the same throughout the years: socio demographic and economic factors.

Myth 6: People with Mental Illness Should not Work

This one is wrong. Very, very wrong. There are cases all over the planet where governments have specially designed plans in place to help people with mental illness with finding jobs. This includes even the patients with the most severe mental disorders. With modern medications and therapy, almost all the symptoms can be controlled until the person fully recovers from the mental illness.

By denying the people with mental illness a chance to work, we can push them further into isolation and deny them something that can be very helpful in their situation, work therapy.

These are just a few of the myths about mental illness that we as a civilization have so carefully constructed. But to what cause? Did we create something better? What people fail to realize is that covering their eyes before the truth only leads to more problems that further complicate the mental disorder and make the mental battle harder than it should be. This are some difficult questions to answer within the span of a single article, so I suggest that anyone who is interested in broadening their knowledge on this topic go out and do some additional research on their own.

Numerous factors, big or small, in the world may cause a person to feel stressed out. It is not a new term to come across. We as human beings often come across a stressful situation, such as a relationship issue, or death of a dear one. And it is completely normal, until and unless it allows you to carry out all your daily tasks as you normally would.

What is Stress?

Stress is nothing but how we react to different situations. While some people may remain calm, some others may get panicked and stressed due to a normal traffic, or maybe due to work pressure at job. Stress, if severe, can be problematic. You tend to adversely affect your physical health or feel dog-tired. Or you may fail to concentrate on simple things.

Nevertheless, your body has a “fight-or-flight” response to such stressful situations. During this process, your body releases some hormones post receiving signals from your brain to boost your potential for responding to a possible threat. But, due to stress having become a common issue, this “fight-or-flight” response process goes recurring. This is where stress management is required, since it provides you with a sea of tools to fight your stress.

Make stress management your goal that you constantly want to achieve. And do not forget to analyze your stress level from time to time. Thereafter, move on to determine what causes you to stress out.

Tips to Manage Stress

1. Notice how you feel – No two people will experience stress in exactly the same manner. Notice how you behave or think when you stress and when you do not.

2. Understand the source – Pay attention to what is the triggering factor of your stress. This factor can be anything, including your relationship with your partner or spouse, your kids, your job, your financial issue, or anything else that matters to you in some way or the other.

3. Understand your way to deal with stress – Try and identify if you go unhealthy when you go stressed out. Maybe you start eating more than enough when you feel uneasy and strained. Analyze if it is your regular or pertain to a specific situation only.

4. Ask for help – Choose from keeping your stress to yourself and continuing to stress or sharing it with friends and family and feeling a bit relaxed. But trust me, the latter will help you cope better with a stressful situation as compared to the former, in which case you would need to consult a professional psychologist.

5. Keep physically active – Forget not making any physical movements at all. Physical exercise of any kind is a great stress reliever. Since, the feel-good endorphins get a boost and bring an enhancement in your overall well-being.

6. Laugh more – Laughter is the best medicine. Definitely, each of your illnesses is not treatable alone by your laughter. But, it certainly helps you feel better. You feel lighter mentally. So, find humor in everything you see or experience.

7. Sleep enough – Take a proper sleep every night i.e. around 7-8 hours. When you sleep well, you feel well, and you react well.

8. Remind yourself – “I am special” – Don’t forget to eat well and drink lots of water every day. Go for a walk, listen to music, and dance to your favorite number. Be happy. Take a break from work. Enjoy yourself. Half of your problems will disappear.

To conclude, stress may be related to a positive or a negative situation. Make sure you gauge your stress level keeping in mind both the aspects. Not suddenly, but gradually, you will learn to manage your stress in the safest and most effective manner.
